A satellite event for the International Conference on Live Coding 2024

An electrifying night of live coded music, art and storytelling in a 360° immersive environment at Inter/Access.
My first time curating and organizing a concert performance, I was thrilled to be able to showcase live coding performers from Toronto, Hamilton, London, Boston and Montréal, and provide them with an opportunity to activate all four walls of this fantastic gallery space, on behalf of and with the support of the Endemics Collective.
Live coding involves creating music or visuals in real time by writing and modifying code during performances. This spontaneous and dynamic process highlights the artistry and skill of the coder.
The code is often projected for the audience to see, promoting transparency. This openness helps demystify coding and encourages learning and participation from the audience.
Performers and audience members share knowledge, support each other, and work together to push the boundaries of what is possible with code.
The live coding community strives to be inclusive and accessible, providing opportunities for people from diverse backgrounds to participate and create, and these sensibilities were very much at the heart of our call for artists and our outreach and promotion for this event.
Live coders often explore experimental and avant-garde music and visuals, challenging conventional forms and embracing new, innovative approaches. There is a strong DIY (Do It Yourself) ethic, with many practitioners developing their own tools and frameworks, and sharing them freely with the community. We were proud to highlight several such initiatives through the night's performances.
I wasn't planning on performing in the event myself, but one of our performers had to drop out just before the show, and so I stepped in to participate in the fun!
The audience was a great mix of creative coding afficionados, friends, and other art and music lovers who had never heard of live coding, but +whose interest was piqued by the opportunity to take in a free immersive experience.
