Down River
Interior mural with a soothing nature scene
This wall at the BJI Pottery studio needed some character. I chose a natural Canadian scene: a tree by a rolling river, with hills in the background and butterflies floating over the edge of the riverbank. I wanted flowing lines for a dynamic sense of movement and fresh air, even in the sky (a gentle daytime homage to Vincent Van Gogh's Starry Night). The angle of the sun flares may look a little peculiar if you're staring at the mural from straight ahead, but it's all designed for the perspective of the potter sitting at her wheel. From where she works, the sun shines right at her wheel and the butterflies fly toward her. This mural is painted with acrylics, 8 feet tall and 6.5 feet wide. It took a long time to paint all the little details but it was well worth it for the love the work receives.
